Five Things that Didn't Happen on Christmas Eve

December 24th, 1995

“It’s Christmastime in the city…” Harry hummed some of the words he didn’t know to the old holiday tune.

Ginny sat down near the window and settled into Harry’s arms. “You have a nice singing voice,” she commented, looking out the window. “And look! It’s snowing. I love snow.” She tilted her head up at Harry so as to see him better. “Don’t you like snow, Harry?”

“Only if I can watch it fall with you.” He kissed her nose upside-down. Suddenly there was a flash.

“Come on, kids,” said James, holding up a camera, grinning mischievously, “family dinner’s ready.”

Bill tossed a pillow at Percy. “So, how’d you like your gift, Perce?” Percy tossed the pillow back, and it hit Bill in the face.

He stood up and showed off his new leather jacket. “Think it suits me?” Ron snorted behind him, and Percy smacked Ron upside the head.

“Aren’t you missing some important work at the Ministry?” Asked Fred.

Percy shrugged. “It’s Christmas. I wanted to be home with the family.”

“Even if it meant telling the Minister to stick it?”

“Even if it meant telling the Minister to stick it.”

“Never thought you had it in you.”

Remus fiddled with one of Dora Tonks’ toes as he watched Sirius dance by with his newest girlfriend.

“What do you think of them, Dora?”

Dora hooked her foot over Remus’ shoulder and leaned forward to kiss him lightly. “I think they make a wonderful, odd couple. Just like us.”

“Just like us. You think we’re and odd couple?”

Dora grinned. “Of course, don’t you?” She scrunched up her face, and her hair became a spiky, vibrant blue.

“Sure.” He pointed to the window and sighed contentedly. “It’s a full moon tonight. Isn’t it beautiful?” Remus loved a full moon.

December 24th, 1996

Peter knocked back his glass of Firewhiskey at the end of the toast, collapsing against his friends in a bout of (slightly drunken) laughter.

After the four of them had regained their balance, they spread off into different directions. Peter sat down and had a chat about the Weasley Family Joke Shop with Molly, then contented himself with watching the festivities beside his fiancé, Amanda Bones.

Peter saw Remus and Tonks on the couch, Ron and Hermione stuck under the mistletoe (for the fifth time that night), and Sirius and James dancing about in dresses.

Some things would never change.

December 24th, 1996

Sirius tapped a wine glass with his spoon. “Ladies and Gents!” He announced. “Please do pay attention to what may be the most serious thing I have done in my life. No pun intended.”

He knelt down in front of her, and held out a diamond ring. “Emmeline Vance, will you marry me?”

Sirius’ mother nearly fainted, while James, Peter, Remus, and Regulus all whistled. Emmeline merely nodded weakly, and let her love sweep her into his arms. Not soon after, however, Narcissa and Bellatrix burst in, asking if they’d missed anything important.

Hermione sighed and handed Ron five Galleons.
